For a lot of skin conditions, using toner is one of those things that can either be optional or, if you have sensitive skin, better avoided. However, if you’ve found your way to this article then you’re a fellow sufferer from Acne and/or oily skin. For us, a toner is key to our skin care, so that’s why I’ve put together the ultimate guide to Toners, selected 5 of the best options on the market, and given my personal opinion as to which I think is the best (and why).
The Benefits Of A Toner For Acne Sufferers:
It’s impossible to have clear skin if you don’t have clean skin and that’s where your toner is going to help. It’s going get rid of all the dirt and makeup from your face, for more effectively more effectively than simply washing would. You should definitely be using toner if you like to use a lot of makeup or heavy skincare products. If kept on for any length of time, they’re going to mix with dirt and sweat and clog up your pores.
Feel fresh – Toner will make not only clean your skin, you’ll also feel fresh, which I love after a day of wearing makeup. To have the fresh, clean sensation.
If you suffer from acne then you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about, because you know the feeling of your skin after a full day, how clogged it feels, and toner will help prevent that.
Oil control – One of the most important benefits of toner, for girls with Acne, is oil control. Toners that contain alcohol or glycolic acid reduce oil production and therefore less likely to have outbreaks of acne.
Skin balance – Toners over soap help the skin to keep its natural pH level and therefore better protected against bacteria, such as acne. Soap has a nasty habit of stripping the skin of natural oils which help to keep the pH balance, and when the skin is stripped of these oils it’s less protected against bacteria.
Tighten pores – Finally, toners can tighten your skin’s pores, they’ll decrease in size making is more difficult for debris and dirt to get trapped.
OZ Naturals Facial Toner
OZ Naturals is a Vitamin C based toner that is vegan, alcohol-free and 100% natural. As well as being a suitable toner for someone who suffers from acne, it also boasts that it’s Anti-aging and is a toner that is safe for is skin types as it doesn’t contain ingredients such as sulfates or parabens.
Freshness: Ingredients that include a blend of amino acids, vitamin C, and Glycolic acid all help to clean the skin, and don’t underestimate the role of the ocean minerals in the toner for giving you that fresh feeling
Healing: It’s the “anti-aging” active ingredients that work for acne sufferers, ingredients like organic sulfur because they double up as ingredients that allow nutrients to be absorbed speeding on the healing process.
Vibrant: The vitamin C helps to keep the pH balance neutral and gives the skin energy and vibrancy.
Some drawbacks: The nozzle is flimsy and breaks easily, which is annoying. Also, the tonic does have a smell which can be overwhelming to some and when you want the fresh face feeling, you don’t want it interrupted with a less than pleasing whiff.
Our verdict: Pretty good. We like that it is completely organic, that it has ingredients like vitamin C and that really does make the skin less oily and re-balances the pH of the skin. It feels like an all round toner rather than one that really does all it can for acne sufferers. The generality of toner together with the smell, which isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, are the only real drawbacks.
Christina Moss Naturals Organic Facial Tone
I love the fact that it’s organic and even GMO-free. It’s really gentle to use whilst having enough active ingredients to actually do what we need when we have oily skin and bouts of acne. It does a lot for antiaging which for us means healing after acne has broken out, it also is meant to improve complexion.
Freshness: It has the normal active ingredients to clean your skin and unclog pores, it even exfoliates the skin slightly to help remove dead skin which really adds to that feeling of being fresh and clean after, which we love.
Healing: The toner has carefully selected mild ingredients that offer a lot of healing capability, ingredients such as green tea extract, aloe vera, and COQ10. These not only help with healing after acne but they also hydrate the skin, restoring some elasticity.
Vibrant: Many people have talked about the tight skin feeling after using, and it restores some complexion possible partly thanks to the rehydration of the skin.
Some drawbacks: It’s not the cheapest toner on the market. I wouldn’t say it’s expensive but some readers might see other options as offering better value for money. In some cases, reviewers have not really seen a major improvement, although generally, the feedback has been positive.
Our verdict: A good toner. Organic and non-GMO tick a lot of boxes, so do the added healing and calming properties of ingredients like Green Tea extract and Aloe Vera. In most cases, it gently restores the pH level, rehydrates the skin has some anti-aging benefits but it didn’t work for everyone and it’s not the cheapest in our top 5.
Foxbrim Orange Blossom Water Toner
Another toner that is 100% natural, which is fast becoming something we expect from our toner, is good for all skin types. The difference is, this toner has 2 ingredients, Orange Blossom, and water so it’s about as close to nature as you can get, and it so happens that Orange Blossom happens to be a good friend to acne suffers.
Freshness: Orange Blossom Water is blessed with having astringent and antimicrobial properties that help to not only remove the skin of oil, makeup, and dirt, but also to make you feel fresh and for your skin to feel balanced.
Healing: It doesn’t help with anti-aging in the manner other toners do, but at the same time, it has anti-inflammatory properties and works to removing scarring after severe bouts of acne, so in some ways, it’s a perfect fit for acne sufferers.
Vibrant: One of it’s more well-known qualities is that it’s used in anti-wrinkle creams, and also its ability to hydrate the skin.(it’s based on water) so it does make you feel fresh, but also puts some life back into your skin.
Some drawbacks: The smell is pretty strong when you first apply it If you don’t like the smell of Orange Blossom then that’s really going to be an issue, but from our experience, the smell disappears pretty quickly. Some people with less severe acne have complained it’s left them dry so it’s a better fit for medium to severe acne sufferers or significantly oily skin,
Our verdict: Natural is best. The others that have made our top 5 have all been quoted as being natural but this is literally Orange blossom and water. It’s effective, good at healing damaged skin and leaves you feeling clean and your skin hydrated. It’s got a pretty strong smell, which could be an issue for some people, and it’s not really for people with milder skin. It’s not bad, it just leaves them feeling a little too dry on occasion.
Neal’s Yard Remedies Rehydrating Rose Toner
A great toner for combination skin or for Acne sufferers who also need a toner that’s suitable for sensitive skin. It has a nice balance of active ingredients that cleans, hydrates, moisturizes and balances your skin to keep you feeling clean and fresh, but also ideal for everyday life and after acne breakouts. A real great all rounder which is why it comes it a #2 on our list.
Freshness: Made from Damask Roses, this toner comes in a spray form, which means it can be used through the day to clean and refresh your skin. It also lasts forever. The small amount of alcohol that helps cleansing is balanced with aloe vera and glycerin that helps to leave you feeling fresh and your skin soothed.
Healing: As a Vitamin C based serum, the spray helps to rehydrate and replenish nutrients which help the skin to recover after a bout an acne. It’s very mild and it’s subtle balancing properties help to prevent acne and prevention is always than a cure.
Vibrant: What makes this toner popular is its versatility. It’s great on all skin and has active ingredients like Vitamin C, Aloe Vera, and Glycerin that have great replenishing effects leaving the skin looking fresh and balanced.
Some drawbacks: It has a mild rose scent, which I quite but not everyone will. I always prefer toners to be odorless because when you’ve taken your makeup off a long day, you want to feel fresh and clean and for me, a scent sometimes takes away from that feeling. It also using alcohol which can have a drying effect on the skin,
Our verdict: There’s a lot to love with Neal’s Yard Remedies Rehydrating Rose Tone because it’s great for acne sufferers who have more complex skin than just oily skin day and night. It’s a gentle toner that replenishes and rehydrates the skin but also helps to prevent acne breaking out by keeping the skin nicely balanced. It has a scent, which not everyone will love but it’s mild and otherwise, it’s a great option as a toner for anyone who has acne.
Simple Soothing Facial Toner
For such as hardworking toner Simple Soothing Facial Toner is actual very gentle to your skin, which is one of it’s best features. Right from the start, it removes debris and stubborn makeup better than any other on the list. And it does this without alcohol. But it doesn’t stop there, it has active ingredients to rebalance the pH of the skin, leaving you feeling fresh and clean. It is able to add some vibrancy both to the appearance of your skin and at a nutritional level making it our favorite and worthy of top spot on our list for toners suitable for acne sufferers.
Freshness: It cleans your skin like no other and the old adage is true. You can’t have clear skin if you don’t have clean skin. It’s especially effective at removing makeup, even things like waterproof eyeliner. It cleans gently, it doesn’t use alcohol, but it is no less effective and once you are clean, it leaves you feeling fresh and has a nice cooling effect too. Hazel water help to leave your skin feeling smooth.

Vibrant: Hazel water helps to leave you with smooth skin that looks visibly great. Your skin feels more balanced and less oily to the touch because it is, and the moisturizing ingredients work over the time to leave your skin in good condition and hydrated.
Some drawbacks: Nothing is perfect, and I can’t imagine Simple Soothing Facial Toner is any different. But having said that, nothing really stands out. Unlike others that are on this list, it’s not scented, it’s cheaper than all the others, and it’s very gentle so it’s good for all skin types, even combination skin and for people like me, who is prone to acne.
Our verdict: I can’t speak highly enough of Simple Soothing Facial Toner. Whilst staying gentle and suitable for all skin type, without using alcohol, it cleans better than any other toner I’ve used. It removes stubborn makeup even. It leaves your skin feeling clean but also feeling refreshed and soft to touch. It has a cooling effect, which after removing all your makeup after a long day is a nice sensation. It’s full of vitamin C and other antioxidants so it helps to restore the nutrients to your skin, it also rebalances your pH level and restores the protective barrier on the skin that other toners damage when trying to rebalance oily skin. It moisturizes the skin and leaves your skin reenergized after.
As far as toners go, this does it all. It’s good for all skin types, especially oily of combination skin, but being fragrance-free and not using alcohol means it’s even good for sensitive skin types. And finally, it’s slightly cheaper than any other on the list. When comparing toners, we don’t normally talk about price because what is affordable to one reader might be expensive to another. We do mention if it’s especially expensive and if it’s slightly more affordable, and Simple Soothing Facial Toner is around 20-25% cheaper than others that made the top 5.
